Easy Layered Cabbage Casserole with Juicy Minced Meat | Best Comfort Food Recipe

Layered cabbage is a staple in our household. I especially love it made with ground meat, just like Grandma used to. It adds a unique, savory flavor to this classic comfort food. It’s so easy to make in a skillet and always a hit with the whole family.

Ingredients for My Layered Cabbage Dish

Layered cabbage always brings back fond memories from my past. It’s one of those treasured recipes I learned from my grandma. This hearty, down-to-earth dish is perfect for cosy days when we want to stay warm. To achieve its distinctive, savoury flavour, you’ll need just a few key ingredients:

  • Savoy Cabbage: In season from May to December, this mild cabbage is available locally during these months.
  • Ground Meat: I prefer using mixed organic ground meat, which adds a wonderful depth of flavour and juiciness to the dish.
  • Potatoes: Opt for waxy or mostly waxy potato varieties. The latter gives the dish a slightly thicker consistency while still retaining some texture. You can, however, make the recipe without potatoes, similar to my savoy cabbage and ground meat skillet dish.
  • Onion and Garlic: I always use a regular onion for its strong aroma and fresh garlic for added flavour.
  • Tomato Paste: This adds a fruity note to the dish.
  • Vegetable Broth: I use homemade vegetable broth, but store-bought versions work as well.
  • Spices: For that unmistakable flavour, you’ll need two kinds of paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper—nothing more is needed.
  • Sour Cream and Parsley for Serving: The dish is best served with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of fresh parsley for that final touch.

Simple Recipe for Layered Cabbage with Ground Meat

I absolutely love simple, home-style cooking, especially when it uses just a few local ingredients. Layered cabbage is one of my favourite recipes for this reason. The best part? You only end up with one pan to clean!

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Start by peeling and dicing the potatoes. Chop the onion and garlic, and cut the savoy cabbage into small pieces. For tips on how to properly clean and cut savoy cabbage, check out our guide on preparing savoy cabbage.
  2. Cook the Ground Meat: Brown the ground meat over high heat. Add the tomato paste and cook it with the meat to enhance the flavour.
  3. Simmer the Dish: Once the meat is browned, add the remaining ingredients. Let everything simmer together. Finally, season with spices to taste.
  4. Serve: The dish is best enjoyed with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of fresh parsley.
